How Braces Have Changed Throughout the Years

Braces have been around since the early 1900s and are still around today. However, many people are changing the way they want to straighten their teeth.

Let’s face it, braces are not the most flattering thing you can add to your smile. Many people, especially teenagers and older adults, feel more insecure about using traditional metal braces. However, some people get them on and are not concerned about how they look because they know these braces are going to do their job in perfecting their smile in the long run. It is all about preference.

In the past couple of years, more alternatives to braces have been introduced to the field of dentistry. While traditional metal braces are still in use today, alternatives like Invisalign provide people more option on how they want to straighten their teeth.

What Is Invisalign and What Are the Benefits?

Invisalign is more modern, unique approach to regular conventional metal braces. Are you sick of getting that metal taste in your mouth? Getting food stuck in your braces every time you eat because you can’t take them off? Does your mouth feel big and bulky with them on? Well, we have just the solution for you.

Invisalign is a revolutionary treatment that focuses on correcting dental problems such as teeth alignment, overbites, underbites, and more. Invisalign hit the market back in 1998 and by the year 2000, everyone was raving about this new alternative to braces. What is all the hype about with Invisalign you might ask? Invisalign can fix many dental problems. Check out the benefits below.

Optimal Comfort

One of the reasons why Invisalign has increased is popularity  is because of how comfortable these aligners actually are. No more worrying about metal getting caught up in your cheeks, lips, and tongue. Invisalign aligners are trays made out of medical grade plastic, so they cause minimal mouth discomfort.

Enhanced Appearance

As we all know, traditional braces can have a bulky look to them when placed on your teeth. If you are an adult, chances are you do not want people to notice you have braces.  With Invisalign, nobody will be able to tell you have these aligner trays on your teeth – that is how clean and transparent they look.

Less Dental Visits

Do you dread going back to the orthodontist every time you have to get your traditional braces tightened? Ouch! With Invisalign, you won’t have to worry about going to the dentist every time you need any type of adjustment. Instead, with Invisalign clear aligners, you are provided a set of trays that get you through several months of treatment before needing to check in with our staff.

Easier to Clean

Metal braces are a pain to clean after eating certain types of foods. And what about flossing? A nightmare. It’s almost impossible to get all food particles out from braces. Invisalign makes it easy to clean, brush, and floss your teeth because you are able to remove the trays from your mouth.

Better yet - no food restrictions. This has been a major benefit in the way braces are changing now with Invisalign. Since you can take off your Invisalign, you are able to eat anything you want without having to worry about the food getting stuck in unwanted places in your teeth.

At What Age Should I Get Invisalign?

If you are interested in an alternative to metal braces, look no further. Invisalign is safe for children, teens, and adults. Children can be a bit tricky, but we like to make sure the child has majority of their permanent teeth grown in before considering any type of braces.

With that being said, children as young as 10-years-old will be able to receive Invisalign treatment. However, most dentists recommend waiting until your child is around the ages of 12 to 13 due to handling and maintenance issues. Children’s minds work a mile a minute and they tend to misplace something and forget where they put it. Children may also struggle to keep their aligners on for the required time limit of 22 hours a day, which can get in the way of treatment.
